Students raise funds to help dig well in India

VICTORVILLE — The idea of raising $670 at first seemed impossible to
Stephanie Hammond. The eighth-grader and president of the Mideract Club at Imogene Garner Hook Junior High School didn't know how the group of 24 students would raise that much money. The money would go to India to dig a well to provide fresh water for the people there. The members of the school club, sponsored by the Victorville Rotary Club, held a dance on Nov. 18 and raised all the money they needed. |

On Friday, they presented the money to Ryan McEachron of the Rotary Club
of Victorville. "It's kind of odd thinking I'm going to help someone I'm never going know," Hammond said. The well will provide water to 100 families or about 500 people, said Robert Castro, also an eighth-grader. The people in the Indian village spend most of their day carrying water and they only make about $1 a day, Castro said. "We knew we had to do something," he said.
